Hinges and Locking Supports for Fold-Down Tables and Desks: Which Type Does Which Job
A “hinge for a fold-down table” can be four different parts: a locking folding bracket that carries the top from the wall, a drop-leaf hinge that joins a leaf to a fixed strip, a flap stay that holds a desk front level, or a locking leg hinge for a fold-out leg. Only the first carries a table on its own. Pick the part by the job, then check that its screws land in a stud.

The short version
For a top that hangs on the wall, buy locking folding brackets – they are the hinge and the support in one. Drop-leaf hinges only join a leaf to a fixed strip and need a leaf support underneath; Rockler rates its metal support at 50 lb per support. Flap stays hold a fold-down desk front level, and locking leg hinges fold a leg out under the front edge.

Why there is no single pick here
The hinge parts sold on Amazon for fold-down tables come with seller data only: a size, a material and often a large load figure without saying per piece or per pair, or for which wall. The hardware with real maker data in our research – Rockler's drop-leaf hinges and supports and Sugatsune's flap stay – we read on the maker or retailer page, but we cannot link it as an Amazon product. So this page explains which part does which job, shows the Amazon options marked “Seller data only”, and names a ready-made table with maker data at the end.

Locking folding brackets: the hinge that carries the table
When people search for a fold-down table hinge, this is usually the part they need. A folding bracket is a wall plate and an arm joined by a hinge; when you lift the top, the arm swings out and locks at a right angle, and squeezing a release lets it fold down again. VIVO's manual describes exactly this on its 43-inch bench: squeeze the levers to fold, pull the top up until the latches engage. Mount-It! calls the same parts “folding arm mounts” and tells you to set them under the top so their distance equals the distance between two stud centers.
That is the key point: the bracket is only as good as its screws in the wall. Wood studs are 16 or 24 inches on center (IRC Table R602.3(5)), so plan the bracket spacing on your studs or mount a ledger board across them first.

CLT 24 in, stainless, pair
For tops about 20 to 24 inches deep. The listing is the only one in our data that tells buyers to mount the brackets on studs; its “max. load 440 lb” does not say per bracket or per pair. Which arm length suits which top is answered in what bracket length a 24-inch-deep table needs.
16 in and 12 in stainless pairs
The 16-inch pair suits laundry, desk and breakfast tops about 16 to 18 inches deep and comes with screws, which are not a substitute for fasteners matched to your wall. The 12-inch pair is for shallow ledges and bench seats; under a dining-depth top it leaves too much overhang. All lengths with their printed figures are on the page about folding shelf brackets.
Drop-leaf hinges and leaf supports
A drop-leaf table has a fixed part and a hinged leaf; when the leaf is up, something underneath has to hold it. On a wall-mounted drop-leaf, the fixed part is a narrow strip screwed to the wall, and the hinge joins the leaf to that strip.
Rockler's brass-plated drop-leaf hinges (item 29256) show what such a hinge is: a fixed-pin hinge, 1½ x 3³⁄₁₆ inches, sold as a pair with twelve #7 x 5/8-inch screws, made for leaves with a rule joint. Rockler notes that a rule joint needs a channel in the underside of the table for the hinge knuckle, and that the longer half of the hinge always goes on the leaf.
The hinge does not hold the leaf up. For that, Rockler sells a metal drop-leaf support: 14¾ inches long, solid metal, with a weight limit of 50 lb per support (100 lb for the pair), reaching 7¾ inches out beyond the table edge. Rockler recommends two supports per leaf, or one for smaller leaves. On a wall table, the fixed strip and its screws then carry the leaf, the supports and whatever sits on the table – so the strip belongs on studs.
If you want this design ready-made, the COSTWAY drop-leaf table* uses metal hinges on a wooden support, folds to 3.0 inches and is rated 66 lb by Costway, which names no wall type. The page on wall-mounted drop-leaf tables compares the options.
Flap stays for fold-down desks
A Murphy-style desk – a shallow cabinet whose front swings down to become the work surface – needs a different part: a drop-front support, also called a flap stay, mounted on the side of the cabinet. Sugatsune's SDS-C100, sold through Rockler, lowers a desk lid or fall-front door gently, holds it level as a writing surface and has an integral catch that keeps it closed. It is non-handed, so it fits left or right. Sugatsune does not print a single weight limit on that page; it refers to its technical documents to check whether a lid's weight suits the stay and how many stays are needed. Size the stay for the front before you build the cabinet.
Locking leg hinges for a fold-out leg
A leg under the front edge sends part of the load straight to the floor, so less of it pulls on the wall screws. That is the principle of the Lifetime work table with its legs. For a DIY top, small self-locking leg hinges fold a leg out and lock it square.
TopDirect Locking Leg Hinge (4)
Small self-locking steel hinges that hold a fold-out table leg at 90 degrees.
Seller data only: We only have the Amazon listing for this product. We list it as an option, not as a recommendation.
Why here: Four small steel leg hinges that lock a fold-out leg at 90 degrees – for a leg under the front edge of a top that already hangs on brackets.
Best for: Adding fold-out legs under a DIY wall table or workbench top
- Locks at 90 degrees, according to the seller
- Four hinges per pack (listing)
- Steel, about 2.5 x 2.7 x 2.1 in (listing)
- Only seller data
- “Up to 500 pounds” in the listing without saying per hinge, per set or under which load
- A leg hinge, not a wall bracket: it does not carry a top on its own
- Type
- Self-locking folding leg hinge, 4 pcs (listing)
- Hinge size
- 2.48 x 2.68 x 2.13 in, 0.098 in steel (listing)
- Load rating
- 500 lb claimed, basis not stated (listing)
- Mounting
- Screwed to top and leg (listing)
According to the seller, each hinge measures 2.48 x 2.68 x 2.13 inches in 0.098-inch steel and locks at 90 degrees with a built-in double spring. The listing's “up to 500 pounds” does not say per hinge or per set or under which load, so treat it as unverified. A leg hinge is no wall support: the top still needs brackets or a hinged strip screwed into studs.
What to check before you buy
- The job. Carrying a top from the wall, joining a leaf, holding a desk front or folding a leg – each needs its own part.
- The load path. Follow the weight from the top to the wall or floor. Every part on that path needs a stated figure or a clear safety margin.
- The screws. Hinges and brackets come with short screws for the wood parts. The wall side needs fasteners matched to studs, ledger or masonry.
- The fold. A folded top hangs down about as far as it is deep. Check that it clears outlets, heaters and furniture below.
- The printed figure. Bracket and hinge listings in our data print load numbers without per-piece or per-pair information and without a wall. Read them as unverified.
Typical mistakes
- Buying drop-leaf hinges for a top that hangs on the wall. Without a support or bracket, the leaf has nothing to rest on.
- Treating leg hinges as the only support. They keep a leg square; they do not fix the top to the wall.
- Mounting brackets between studs. Hollow-wall anchors carry only a fraction of their headline figure.
- Using the supplied screws on the wall side without checking that they suit your wall.
Verdict
For a fold-down wall table or workbench, the hinge you need is a pair of locking folding brackets in a length close to the depth of your top, screwed into studs or a ledger board. Drop-leaf hinges and flap stays belong to specific designs – a leaf on a fixed strip, a desk front in a cabinet – and always need a separate support. Locking leg hinges are an extra, not a replacement. The complete builds are on the pages for a DIY fold-down table, a DIY Murphy table and a DIY folding workbench.
Questions people ask
What hinge do I need for a fold-down desk?
It depends on how the desk opens. A top that folds up from the wall needs locking folding brackets underneath. A cabinet front that swings down to become the writing surface needs a drop-front support or flap stay on the side, such as Sugatsune's SDS-C100, which holds the lid level and has a built-in catch. Sugatsune says to check its technical documents for lid weight and the number of supports.
What hinges does a Murphy table use?
We found no maker spec for a dedicated Murphy-table hinge kit. A Murphy-style table is usually a panel hinged along one edge plus something that carries the open top: folding brackets, a stay or a fold-out leg. Plan the load path first – the hinge only keeps the parts together, the brackets or the leg carry the weight.
Can drop-leaf hinges hold a wall table on their own?
No. A drop-leaf hinge joins the leaf to the fixed part of the table, it does not support the leaf when it is up. Rockler sells metal drop-leaf supports for that job and recommends two supports per leaf, one for smaller leaves, at 50 lb per support. On a wall table, the fixed strip itself must be screwed into studs.
Are locking hinges for folding table legs strong enough for a workbench?
The listings in our data do not tell you. The TopDirect hinge listing states “up to 500 pounds” and a 90-degree lock, but not per hinge or per set, or under which load. Use leg hinges to bring a fold-out leg under the front edge of a top that already hangs on brackets, not as the only support.
