How Much Weight Can a Wall-Mounted Folding Table Hold? Rating, Wall and Leverage
A wall-mounted folding table holds as much as its maker states for the stated mounting – and no more than the fixing in your wall allows. Maker figures in our comparison range from 33 lb (Mount-It!, own page) over 66 lb (Costway) and 110 lb (VIVO, on wood stud, brick or concrete) to 150 lb for the Lifetime work table with legs (Home Depot spec sheet).

The short version
Plan with the maker's figure for the mounting it names, and with the lower figure when sources disagree: 33 lb for the Mount-It! MI-7993, 66 lb for the COSTWAY drop-leaf, 110 lb for the VIVO workbench on wood stud, brick or concrete. The real limit is usually the fixing: studs or a ledger board, never hollow-wall anchors alone, and a deep top pulls harder on its top screws.

The answer in figures
A load rating is the maker's or seller's figure for the table on a sound wall with the stated mounting. That is why we never print a load figure without the mounting it assumes, or without saying that the source names none. Here are the figures for the tables in our comparison:
| Table | Stated load | Mounting the source assumes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mount-It! MI-7993, 45 x 15 in | 33 lb | hardware included, wall type not named | Mount-It! page |
| COSTWAY drop-leaf, 31.5 x 23.5 in | 66 lb max | not named; supplied expansion screws | Costway page |
| Neoaider 31.5 x 15.7 in | 80 lb recommended, 100 lb warning limit | six screws into the wall, studs not mentioned | Amazon listing |
| VIVO workbench, 43 x 18 in | 110 lb | wood stud, brick or concrete | VIVO page |
| Lifetime 80421 work table | 150 lb | 16-inch stud spacing, fold-down legs under the front | Lifetime page, Home Depot spec sheet |
| CLT folding brackets, 24 in | 440 lb max | on studs; per bracket or per pair not stated | Amazon listing |
Two things stand out. First, the figures differ by a factor of more than four, although all of these tables hang on a wall. Second, only VIVO and Lifetime say what kind of wall the figure is for. A figure without a wall is a statement about the table, not about your installation.
You will find bigger and smaller numbers in AI answers and on content sites: “50 to 500 pounds” or “30 to 150 lb” for wall tables in general. Such ranges mean little. Always read the figure for the exact model and the mounting it names.
Why the wall sets the limit
An open fold-down table works like a lever. The load on the top pushes down at some distance from the wall; the brackets turn that into a pull on the upper screws and a push against the wall at the bottom. The deeper the top and the further out the load sits, the harder the top screws are pulled out of the wall. A plate at the front edge of a 23.5-inch top pulls harder on the screws than the same plate near the wall.
TOGGLER's technical sheet for its hollow-wall anchors makes the same point: holding strength drops as the distance of the load from the wall grows, and it depends on the strength and condition of the wall material. That is why the same table can be solid on one wall and unsafe on another.
In its drywall tests, TOGGLER measures failure as the drywall starting to gouge or break, not as the steel anchor giving way. A wall table on hollow-wall anchors therefore relies on the gypsum board. How to avoid that is answered under can you mount a folding table on drywall without studs.
Studs: 16 or 24 inches on center
In most US homes, a wall table goes through drywall into wood studs. Those studs are 16 or 24 inches on center, depending on stud size and load: the residential code table for wood studs (IRC Table R602.3(5)) allows 24 inches for 2x4 studs that carry only a roof and ceiling and 16 inches when they also carry a floor; non-bearing walls may use 24 inches. So 16 inches is common but not universal.
For your table, this decides whether both brackets reach a stud. A 24-inch top on a 24-inch wall may reach only one stud. Then a ledger board screwed across at least two studs carries the brackets. The check below shows how many studs a top covers and whether two brackets can both sit on studs.
Stud span check
Enter the width of the top and the stud spacing of your wall.
Depending on where you place it, the top spans 1 to 2 studs.
Fewer than two studs are guaranteed: plan a ledger board that spans at least two studs.
Pure geometry from the stud spacing. Find the actual studs in your wall with a stud finder before drilling.
How to plan the load
- Read the figure on the maker's page, together with the wall type it names. If the maker names none, note that.
- Take the lower figure when the maker page, the listing and the retailer disagree.
- Find and mark the studs before you choose the table width.
- Use a ledger board across at least two studs if the brackets do not land on studs.
- Use the fasteners the maker's instructions call for – wood screws into studs, masonry anchors for brick or concrete – not the generic anchors from the hardware bag. If the instructions do not cover your wall, ask a contractor.
- Keep heavy items near the wall rather than at the front edge.
The full procedure, from stud finder to level, is in the guide on how to install a wall-mounted folding table.
Which table for heavier loads
VIVO 43 x 18 Workbench
A 43-inch workbench top on steel brackets that folds to 2.3 inches from the wall.
Why here: The highest maker-stated rating among the bracket tables in our comparison, and the only maker that names the walls: wood stud, brick or concrete.
Best for: Garages and basements with wood studs, brick or concrete walls
- VIVO names the wall types: wood stud, brick or concrete
- 110 lb capacity stated by the maker
- Folds to 2.3 in from the wall
- 3-year warranty (VIVO)
- Particle board top – not for wet work or heavy pounding
- Type
- Top on folding steel brackets
- Top size
- 43.3 x 18 x 1 in
- Load rating
- 110 lb (VIVO)
- Mounting
- Wood stud, brick or concrete (VIVO)
- Folded depth
- 2.3 in (VIVO)
- Warranty
- 3 years (VIVO)
If you need more than that, a table whose legs carry the front edge takes load off the wall: the Lifetime 80421 work table, listed at 150 lb on the Home Depot spec sheet. For a kitchen top, the COSTWAY drop-leaf with its 66 lb maximum covers place settings for two, as long as the wall fixing is sound. All models with their ratings and mounting are side by side in the comparison of the best wall-mounted folding tables.
Practical tips
- Do not sit on the front edge or stand on the table. None of the maker pages we read rates its table for that.
- Renters: adhesive strips and tension rods are no mounting method for a load-bearing wall table; every product we compared mounts with screws. Ask for written permission first.
The method behind our figures is described under how we research; more guides start on the homepage. Height questions are covered in the guide to mounting height.
Questions people ask
How much weight can a wall-mounted folding table hold, and does it need to be screwed into studs?
As much as the maker states for the mounting it names: for example 66 lb for the COSTWAY drop-leaf table and 110 lb for the VIVO workbench on wood stud, brick or concrete. Yes, it belongs in studs, on a ledger board screwed across studs, or in masonry with suitable anchors. The studs and fasteners usually limit the load before the table does.
Why do different shops list different weight limits for the same table?
Because the figures come from different people. Mount-It! states 33 lb on its own page for its MI-7993 drop-down table, while some retailers list a higher figure for the same model. One Neoaider listing gives 80 lb recommended and a 100 lb warning limit at the same time. When sources disagree, plan with the lower figure, ideally the one on the maker's own page.
How much weight can a toggle bolt in drywall hold?
TOGGLER's technical sheet lists about 120 kg (265 lb) ultimate tension for its 1/4-inch (M6) SNAPTOGGLE in 1/2-inch drywall and notes that industry standards recommend one quarter of the ultimate test load as the working load – about 30 kg (66 lb) per anchor in a lab setting. A fold-down table's top screws see more pull than the load on the table, so this is no basis for adding up anchors.
Is a folding bracket's load rating per bracket or per pair?
The bracket listings in our data do not say. The CLT 24-inch pair prints “max. load 440 lb” without per bracket, per pair or a wall type. Quote such figures only as printed, assume the lower reading and remember that the wall fixing usually limits the load first.
