Wall-Mounted Folding Dining and Kitchen Tables for Two

For two people eating at a kitchen wall, the top needs depth more than width: most fold-down tables are 15 to 16 inches deep, which is one plate wide. Our pick is the COSTWAY drop-leaf table, 31.5 x 23.5 inches open and 3.0 inches folded according to Costway. Screw it into studs or a ledger board and put the top edge at about 29 to 30 inches.

The short version

Take the COSTWAY drop-leaf table if two people should sit facing each other: Costway states 31.5 x 23.5 inches open, 3.0 inches folded and a 66 lb maximum load, without naming the wall. For a one-person breakfast ledge, a 15.7-inch-deep top such as the Neoaider is enough. Mount any of them into studs or a ledger board, with the top edge at about 29 to 30 inches.

COSTWAY Drop-Leaf 31.5 x 23.5

A drop-leaf top deep enough for two place settings that folds to 3 inches against the wall.

Why here: At 23.5 inches deep it is the only table in our comparison with maker data that seats two people facing each other, and it folds to 3.0 inches.

Best for: Small kitchens and studios where two people eat or work at the wall

  • 23.5 in deep when open – room for two plates facing each other
  • Folded size 31.5 x 21 x 3.0 in according to Costway
  • Two ways to fold: drop one leaf or both
  • Maker states a 66 lb maximum load
  • Costway does not say which wall or fasteners the 66 lb rating assumes
  • The supplied expansion screws are generic – plan your own fasteners for studs or masonry
  • MDF top: wipe spills, do not leave it wet

A kitchen table on the wall has one job that most fold-down tables do not do well: two plates facing each other. That needs depth. Most of the wall tables we compared are 15 to 16 inches deep, which is a breakfast ledge for one or a laptop spot. The COSTWAY drop-leaf table opens to 31.5 x 23.5 inches and folds to 31.5 x 21 x 3.0 inches, according to Costway. You can drop one leaf for a narrow shelf-like ledge or both for a flat front.

Two honest limits. Costway states a 66 lb maximum load but does not say which wall or which fasteners it assumes, and its instructions show six generic anchors with the warning that each anchor must fit securely in the wall. On a drywall wall, plan your own screws into studs or a ledger board. And the top is MDF over a pine support, so wipe spills rather than leaving them.

The models one by one

COSTWAY drop-leaf 31.5 x 23.5 – for two

The only top here that is deep enough for two place settings across from each other. It folds to 3.0 inches, so a narrow galley kitchen keeps its walkway. Costway lists dining, computer work and storage among the uses and says the table can be fixed at any height you choose. Weak points are the unspecified wall behind the 66 lb rating and the generic anchors. Price class: budget.

Neoaider 31.5 x 15.7 – breakfast ledge for one

A compact white top on folding steel brackets that arrives pre-assembled; the listing names six screws into the wall. It is a good fit for coffee and a plate at the window or a narrow ledge next to the fridge. The listing gives two load figures – 80 lb recommended and a 100 lb warning limit – and does not say the screws must go into studs. Plan with the lower figure. Neoaider wall table on Amazon*.

MM MELISEN solid wood 23.6 x 15.7 – real wood, small top

The one solid-wood top in this group, according to its listing. At 23.6 x 15.7 inches it is a single place setting, a spice-and-coffee ledge or a kids' homework corner rather than a dining table. Its listing prints a 300 lb maximum recommendation without naming a wall – seller data, so treat it as a light-duty surface anyway. More real-wood tops are on the page about solid wood wall folding tables.

Need 47 x 20 – long top for two side by side

At 47 inches long and 20 inches deep (listing), two people can sit side by side, for example along a kitchen window. It is not deep enough to sit face to face comfortably. Its listing gives 100 lb and says mounting onto wall studs is required (seller data). A 47-inch top covers two or three studs at 16 inches on center and one or two at 24 inches, so it usually gives the brackets more studs to choose from than a short top.

Mount-It! 45 x 15 – counter extension, not a dining table

Mount-It! states 45 x 15 inches (or 30 x 15 with the middle segment left out) and only 33 lb on its own page. That makes it a good light counter or bar ledge for groceries and a laptop, but at 15 inches deep it is not a table for two facing each other. Its manual has clear wood-stud and concrete instructions.

For a budget-class first try there is also the TEAMIX black fold-down table*; its listing gives a shallow 23.6 x 11.8 inch top and up to 80 lb – seller data only.

What to check before you buy

Depth first. The two wall tables in our data that are meant for two people facing each other are both around 23 to 24 inches deep: Costway at 23.5 inches, and IKEA's NORBERG at 74 x 60 cm (about 29⅛ x 23⅝ inches), which IKEA lists for two seats.

Folded depth. In a galley kitchen the folded table stays on the wall all day. Costway states 3.0 inches; cabinet-style Murphy tables stand much deeper because the cabinet surrounds the top.

Studs behind the spot. Wood studs are 16 or 24 inches on center (IRC Table R602.3(5)). A 31.5-inch top covers one or two studs at either spacing, depending on where the studs fall – check it here before you drill:

Stud span check

Enter the width of the top and the stud spacing of your wall.

Stud spacing

Depending on where you place it, the top spans 1 to 2 studs.

Fewer than two studs are guaranteed: plan a ledger board that spans at least two studs.

Pure geometry from the stud spacing. Find the actual studs in your wall with a stud finder before drilling.

Height. For normal chairs, put the top edge at about 29 to 30 inches. The ADA Standards set 28 to 34 inches for dining surfaces; the guide to mounting height also covers bar height.

The load rating and its wall. A rating is the maker's figure for a sound wall with the stated mounting. The fixing – studs, anchors and the leverage of a deep top – usually sets the limit. The deeper the top and the further out a plate or elbow rests, the harder the top screws are pulled out of the wall.

Typical mistakes

  • Buying a 15-inch top for two people facing each other. It is one plate deep, so two people end up sitting side by side or cramped.
  • Mounting on drywall anchors. Every table we compared mounts with screws; on drywall those screws belong in studs or a ledger. The guide on how to install a wall-mounted folding table shows each step.
  • Forgetting the chairs. A wall table is only useful if chairs or stools fit in front of it and can be put away, too.
  • Expecting a Murphy table. Many listings called “Murphy table” are desks. The Murphy table guide explains the difference.

Question 1 of 4

Where will the table go?

Conclusion

For two people at a kitchen wall, take the COSTWAY drop-leaf table*: deep enough to face each other, 3.0 inches folded and the only option in this group with maker data for that job. For one person or a ledge, a shallower top is enough. Either way, the wall decides more than the box: studs or a ledger, and a top edge at about 29 to 30 inches. More drop-leaf models are on the drop-leaf wall table page, and every table is in the big comparison. Back to the overview by room.

Questions people ask

What is the best wall-mounted folding table for a small kitchen that seats two?

In our comparison, the COSTWAY drop-leaf table: it opens to 23.5 inches deep, enough for two place settings facing each other, and folds to 3.0 inches according to Costway. Most other fold-down tops are 15 to 16 inches deep, which fits one person or two people side by side. Costway does not say which wall its 66 lb rating assumes, so plan studs or a ledger board.

How deep should a fold-down kitchen table be for two people?

The two-person wall tables in our data are both around 23 to 24 inches deep: the Costway top at 23.5 inches and IKEA's NORBERG at about 23⅝ inches (60 cm), which IKEA lists for two seats. A 15 to 16 inch top is one plate wide and works as a breakfast ledge or for two people sitting side by side on a longer top.

How high should a wall-mounted kitchen table be?

Put the top edge at about 29 to 30 inches above the floor for normal chairs. The 2010 ADA Standards set 28 to 34 inches for dining surfaces, and IKEA mounts its NORBERG wall table at about 29⅛ inches for table use. For bar stools, IKEA gives about 37⅜ or 41¾ inches.

Can a wall-mounted folding table replace a dining table?

For one or two people, yes, if the top is deep enough and the wall can take it. It frees the floor when folded, but the tops are smaller than a freestanding dining table and the wall fixing carries everything. For four people, none of the sourced tables in our comparison is large enough.

Are round fold-down dining tables available?

We found no round fold-down wall table with maker data, so we do not recommend one. The closest in our data is the Neoaider, which has rounded corners according to its listing. A rectangular top uses the wall length fully and gives you more freedom to place the brackets on studs.
