How High to Mount a Wall-Mounted Folding Table: Dining, Desk, Bar and Laundry
Mount the top edge of a wall-mounted folding table at about 29 to 30 inches above the floor for eating and seated work. The 2010 ADA Standards set 28 to 34 inches for dining and work surfaces. For bar stools, IKEA puts its NORBERG table at about 37⅜ or 41¾ inches. For folding laundry there is no official height – only rules of thumb.

The short version
Dining table or desk: top edge at about 29 to 30 inches, within the 28 to 34 inches of ADA 902.3; IKEA mounts its NORBERG at about 29⅛ inches. Bar height: about 37⅜ or 41¾ inches, depending on the stool (IKEA). Laundry: no primary source sets a height; a common rule of thumb is just below your elbow while standing. Always mark the top edge, then subtract the top thickness for the brackets.

The short version by use
The one number that matters is the height of the finished top edge above the floor. Everything else – where the brackets go, where you drill – follows from it.
| Use | Top edge above the floor | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dining, breakfast, seated work | about 29 to 30 in | usual height, inside ADA 902.3 |
| Accessible dining and work surfaces | 28 to 34 in | 2010 ADA Standards 902.3 |
| IKEA NORBERG at table height | about 29⅛ in (74 cm) | IKEA product page |
| IKEA NORBERG at bar height | about 37⅜ or 41¾ in | IKEA product page, depends on stool height |
| Folding laundry while standing | no official figure | rule of thumb only (see below) |
Costway, VIVO and Mount-It! give no mounting height for their tables; Costway only says its drop-leaf table can be fixed at the height you choose. That is why the figures above come from the ADA Standards and from IKEA, not from the tables we recommend.
Dining and desk height: 28 to 34 inches
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design are federal accessibility rules written for public and commercial facilities, not for private homes. They are still the clearest primary source for table height in the US. Section 902.3 says the tops of dining surfaces and work surfaces shall be 28 inches minimum and 34 inches maximum above the finish floor. For meals and seated work, about 29 to 30 inches to the top edge is the usual height, in the lower part of that range.
IKEA's own mounting advice fits that range. For its NORBERG wall-mounted drop-leaf table, IKEA says to mount the table so that the top edge reaches about 29⅛ inches (74 cm) for use at table height.
- dining and work surface height (ADA 902.3)
- 28–34 in
- usual top edge for meals and seated work
- 29–30 in
- upper limit of the knee-clearance zone (ADA 306.3.1)
- 27 in
- minimum knee-clearance width (ADA 306.3.5)
- 30 in
Leave room for knees
A wall table has no apron, but brackets, a cabinet frame or a drop-leaf support can still reach down into the space for your knees. The ADA Standards define knee clearance as the space under an element between 9 and 27 inches above the floor (306.3.1) and require it to be at least 30 inches wide (306.3.5). If you mount a top at 29 inches and its brackets hang several inches below it, check that a seated person's knees still fit between the brackets. For a desk, OSHA's computer workstation guide says the legroom under the desktop should generally be 20 to 28 inches high.
Bar height: follow the stool
A wall table used with bar stools sits much higher. IKEA gives two bar heights for NORBERG: a top edge at about 37⅜ inches or about 41¾ inches, depending on the seat height of the bar chair. These are IKEA's figures for its own table, not a code requirement. Measure the seat height of your stools before you pick one of the two.
Laundry: there is no official height
For a table where you fold laundry standing up, we found no primary source – no code, no standard, no maker figure. AI assistants disagree: in our dossier one model said 36 to 42 inches, another 34 to 36 inches, and neither named a source. We therefore print no "standard height" for laundry.
In a laundry room, the machines often decide more than ergonomics: a table above a front-loader has to clear the machine, and a top-loader lid needs space to open. Measure both before you choose the height. The laundry room guide compares long, light tops for that wall.

From the top edge to the drill holes
Mark the finished top edge with a level and a pencil line first. Then work down:
- Subtract the top thickness. The underside of the top, and with it the upper face of the bracket arms, sits one top thickness below the edge. The VIVO workbench top, for example, is 1 inch thick.
- Find the holes on the bracket. The manual shows where the screw holes sit relative to the arm. Hold the bracket against the line and mark through the holes rather than measuring.
- Check the studs. The holes have to land on a stud or a ledger board at that height. The guide on how to install a wall-mounted folding table covers the drilling step by step.

COSTWAY Drop-Leaf 31.5 x 23.5
A drop-leaf top deep enough for two place settings that folds to 3 inches against the wall.
Why here: Costway leaves the mounting height to you, and at 23.5 inches deep the top is wide enough for two place settings at the usual 29 to 30 inches.
Best for: Small kitchens and studios where two people eat or work at the wall
- 23.5 in deep when open – room for two plates facing each other
- Folded size 31.5 x 21 x 3.0 in according to Costway
- Two ways to fold: drop one leaf or both
- Maker states a 66 lb maximum load
- Costway does not say which wall or fasteners the 66 lb rating assumes
- The supplied expansion screws are generic – plan your own fasteners for studs or masonry
- MDF top: wipe spills, do not leave it wet
- Type
- Drop-leaf top on a wooden support
- Top size
- 31.5 x 23.5 in (open)
- Folded depth
- 3.0 in (Costway)
- Load rating
- 66 lb max (Costway)
- Mounting
- Hinges and screws; studs not mentioned
- Material
- P2 MDF, pine, metal hinges
For a kitchen or dining nook at table height, two people need a deeper top than the 15 to 16 inches of most fold-down tables; the kitchen and dining guide compares the options. If the table is mainly a workspace, the wall-mounted folding desk guide covers monitor distance and depth. All picks are on the home page.
Questions people ask
What height should a wall-mounted folding table be for eating?
Put the top edge at about 29 to 30 inches above the floor. That sits inside the 28 to 34 inches the 2010 ADA Standards set for dining and work surfaces (section 902.3), and IKEA tells NORBERG buyers to mount the top edge at about 29⅛ inches for table use. Check with your own chairs: the seat should leave room for your knees under the top.
What height is a laundry folding table?
There is no standard. We found no primary source for laundry folding height, and AI answers disagree: one model gave 36 to 42 inches, another 34 to 36 inches. A rule of thumb you can check yourself is a top just below your elbow when you stand with your arms relaxed. Mark it, test it with a basket of towels, then drill.
How high should a fold-down desk be?
For seated work the same range applies as for dining: 28 to 34 inches to the top of the work surface under ADA 902.3, and about 29 to 30 inches for most people on a standard chair. OSHA's computer workstation guide adds that the legroom under the desktop should generally be 20 to 28 inches high.
What height is a bar-height wall table?
IKEA gives two bar heights for its NORBERG wall table: a top edge at about 37⅜ inches or about 41¾ inches, depending on the seat height of the bar stool. These are IKEA's figures for one product, not a building code; measure your stools before you drill.
