The short version
Choose the COSTWAY drop-leaf table for a kitchen or dining spot for two: Costway states 31.5 x 23.5 inches open, 3.0 inches folded and a 66 lb maximum load, without naming the wall. For a long, shallow ledge, Mount-It!'s 45 x 15 drop-leaf table is rated only 33 lb on its own page. Mount either into studs or a ledger board, not into drywall alone.

Our pick: COSTWAY drop-leaf for two
COSTWAY Drop-Leaf 31.5 x 23.5

- Folded size 31.5 x 21 x 3.0 in according to Costway

Wikipedia describes a drop-leaf table as a table with a fixed section and a hinged leaf on either side. On the wall version the fixed section becomes a strip on the wall, and the leaf opens into the room. The COSTWAY table works exactly this way: open, it is 31.5 x 23.5 inches; folded, 31.5 x 21 x 3.0 inches, according to Costway. You can drop one leaf for a shallow ledge or both for a flat front. Costway names dining, computer work, a dressing table and a bar table among the uses.
What Costway leaves open is the wall. It states a 66 lb maximum load, but not for which wall or which fasteners. Its instructions show six anchors with screws and the warning that each anchor must fit securely in the wall; studs are not mentioned. On drywall, put your own screws into studs or a ledger board. The top is MDF over a pine support with metal hinges.

The models one by one
COSTWAY 31.5 x 23.5 – the drop-leaf for two
The deepest drop-leaf top in our data and the only one meant for two place settings across from each other. Strengths: 3.0 inches folded, two ways to fold, a maker page with size and load. Weak points: the 66 lb figure names no wall, the anchors are generic, and MDF does not like standing water. Price class: budget.
Mount-It! 45 x 15 – long and shallow
Mount-It! sells its MI-7993 as a wall-mounted drop-leaf table and workbench. The top is three segments: all three give 45 x 15 inches, the outer two alone 30 x 15 inches. The steel arms fold flat, and Mount-It! advertises a lifetime warranty. The catch is the load: Mount-It!'s own page states 33 lb, while some retailers list higher figures – plan with 33 lb. Its manual is the clearest on mounting: three lag screws per arm into studs, with the arms spaced to match the stud centers, or six per arm into concrete with anchors, never into mortar joints. At 15 inches deep it is a ledge for one, a laptop spot or a folding surface, not a dining table for two. Mount-It! drop-down table on Amazon*.
Tianman 47 x 14 pine – a long bar ledge
A 47-inch-long, 14-inch-deep solid pine drop-leaf, according to the listing. It suits a bar ledge under a window or a narrow standing workbench in an industrial look. We have no maker data and no load rating, so treat it as light duty and mount it on studs.
Neoaider 31.5 x 15.7 – a bracket table, for comparison
Strictly speaking a top on folding steel brackets rather than a drop-leaf on a fixed strip, but it is often sold under the same search terms. The listing gives 80 lb recommended and a 100 lb warning limit and names six screws into the wall, without mentioning studs. Plan with the lower figure.
How a drop-leaf differs from other wall tables
| Design | How it opens | Typical use | Folded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drop-leaf on a fixed strip | leaf folds up onto a hinged support | kitchen and dining for one or two | slim (Costway 3.0 in) |
| Top on folding brackets | whole top swings up on steel arms | ledge, laundry, workbench | slim (VIVO 2.3 in) |
| Murphy table | top folds down out of a wall cabinet or panel | dining, with storage | deeper, cabinet included |
| Gateleg (freestanding) | leaf rests on legs that swing out | dining for four or more | stands on the floor |
A gateleg table, in Wikipedia's words, supports its leaf on legs that swing out from the center; it stands on the floor and is no wall table. For a cabinet-style table that closes into the wall, see the Murphy table guide.
What to check before you buy
Open depth. For two people facing each other, the tops in our data that do the job are around 23 to 24 inches deep: Costway at 23.5 inches and IKEA's NORBERG at about 23⅝ inches (60 cm), which IKEA lists for two seats. A 14 to 16 inch leaf is a ledge.
Studs and bracket positions. Wood studs are 16 or 24 inches on center. On a 31.5-inch table the supports may not line up with your studs – then a ledger board across at least two studs is the fix. The guide on how to install a wall-mounted folding table shows each step.
The load rating and its wall. The rating is the maker's figure for a sound wall with the stated mounting. The deeper the leaf and the further out the load, the harder the top screws are pulled out of the wall. The page on weight capacity explains what limits the load in practice.
Height. For meals and seated work, the top edge belongs at about 29 to 30 inches; the 2010 ADA Standards set 28 to 34 inches for dining and work surfaces. IKEA mounts NORBERG at about 29⅛ inches. Details are in the guide to mounting height.
Typical mistakes
- Mounting the fixed strip into drywall anchors only. All the load goes through that strip; it belongs on studs or a ledger.
- Buying a long, narrow leaf for a dining spot. 47 x 14 inches is a bar ledge, not a table for two facing each other.
- Ignoring the fold space. The leaf hangs down when folded. Check that a radiator, outlet or baseboard heater does not sit where it will hang.

Question 1 of 4
Where will the table go?
Conclusion
For most kitchens and small dining corners, the COSTWAY drop-leaf table* is the one to get: deep enough for two, 3.0 inches folded, with maker data on its own page. For a long, light ledge, Mount-It! is the sourced alternative – at 33 lb, really for light loads only. Mount both into studs or a ledger board. Still unsure whether the design suits you? The question is a wall-mounted drop-leaf table worth it walks through the four points that decide it. All tables, desks and workbenches are side by side in the comparison of the best wall-mounted folding tables, and the kitchen and dining guide covers seating for two. Back to the overview by room.
Questions people ask
What is a wall-mounted drop-leaf table?
A table whose fixed section is a strip on the wall and whose hinged leaf folds up into a table. Wikipedia describes a drop-leaf table as a table with a fixed section in the center and a hinged leaf on either side that can be dropped. The wall version simply puts the fixed section on the wall, so only one leaf opens out into the room.
Are drop-leaf tables worth it?
They are worth it where floor space is the limit, one or two people eat or work at the wall, you fold it away at least daily and you may screw into studs or masonry. Folded, the Costway model stands 3.0 inches off the wall according to Costway. The trade-offs: a smaller top than a freestanding table, and a load that depends on the wall fixing. If you need seating for four, a freestanding drop-leaf or gateleg table is the better choice.
What is the difference between a drop-leaf and a gateleg table?
Both have hinged leaves. On a gateleg table, as Wikipedia puts it, the leaf is supported by legs that swing out from the center. A wall-mounted drop-leaf table has no legs: the leaf rests on a hinged support or folding brackets that are screwed to the wall, so the wall carries the load.
Does Walmart sell drop-leaf tables?
Walmart pages appear in Google results for wall-mounted drop-leaf tables, but we did not compare Walmart's range. Our comparison covers models sold on Amazon with maker data where it exists. Whatever the store, check the open depth, the folded depth and whether the maker says which wall the load rating assumes.
Can a drop-leaf wall table be used as a desk?
Yes. Costway lists computer and laptop work among the uses of its drop-leaf table, and the 23.5-inch depth leaves room for a laptop and papers. For a monitor, OSHA's workstation guide asks for at least 20 inches between your eyes and the screen, which is easier on a deep top. More desk options are on the wall-mounted folding desk page.
